Our next Pulse starts 1 August. This pulse is specifically timed to reduce rat numbers prior to bird breeding season. Sadly every year eggs, chicks and mother birds are taken from their nests by rats. Reducing rat numbers now gives our birds their best chance for a great breeding season.
What is pulsing?
Pulsing is the timed, coordinated, quarterly use of bait in bait stations across our area.
Four times a year our bait stations are loaded up. These bait stations are then checked and refilled once a week, every week for a month. At the end of the month the bait is removed and we begin a short period of monitoring.
We have monitoring tunnels all though our Predator Control Areas. By checking for activity in the monitoring tunnels before and after the Pulse, we can track the downward numbers in pests. The amount of bait taken from our traps also gives an indication of predator numbers active in the area.
Backyard trappers who are using bait stations can get involved in Pulsing. It helps to have as many people as possible baiting and trapping across the area, at the same time.
Pulsing is considered best practice and has proven to be very effective in the areas under our control.
We send reminder texts to TUS supporters when the Pulse is about to start. If you would like a reminder txt Joanna 021 1355368 with 'please send reminder txt' as the subject.
